Digitalisation is transforming the energy industry, improving efficiency and safety and by facilitating the use of new technologies. As part of Shell’s ambition to address both the energy transition and digitalisation, their Contracting & Procurement team is combining new agile ways of working and true business partnering.
Shell’s Digital GameChanger Lab works with startups and businesses on unproven early stage ideas, designed to solve actual legitimate business problems by quickly testing new technologies and approaches.
Through their partnership with LABS, Shell has been introduced to Creactives to accelerate the energy transition. This is the story behind their collaboration.

DATA DUPLICATION CHALLENGE.
Shell has accumulated millions of duplicate material master records for products and services which are the same or similar. These records sit in multiple assets and locations all over the world creating costly inefficiencies such as excessive stock volumes, tied up working capital, wasted time processing orders and unnecessary shipping.
Shell asked DPW to find a solution that could detect duplicate material records across various ERP systems.
The best-fit solution identified by LABS would be tested through Shell’s ‘Digital GameChanger Lab’ via a POC, before moving it through the standard business case assessment process, subjected to traditional governance and compliance.
The challenge quickly received interest from a wide range of advanced data management startups.
In just 3 weeks, 57 potential solutions were captured and 7 were shortlisted. One of the shortlisted solutions was Creactives, who Shell met during the LABS Selection Day. The initial meeting developed into further discussions, eventually leading to a POC in the following months.
The benefits delivered from DPW’s scouting project and the following POC with Creactives exceeded expectations:
- 57 potential solutions scouted in just 3 weeks
- Duplicated identification confidence after three rounds of AI refinement was listed as 86%
- Duplicates identified: 36% of stock value on scope – 10.5 M Euro worth of potential and identified stock savings
- 92% of the users as being “Satisfied” with the overall usage of the tool
- 92% of the team agreed that the objective of PoC was met
